Q & A with Dave Holleran

This Month, the Shoot-Out followed Booster Club member and long-time minor pro hockey fan David Holleran through his Chuck-A-Puck  routine.

Understandably, Holleran doesn't want to share his winning  technique. From watching him in action, we'll advise that you get close to the glass, right on the red line, and throw hard.

Q. Can you tell us how you came to be a minor pro hockey fan in Arizona?
A. In 1972, when I first moved to town from Grand Forks. I know Al Bianchi, the assistant coach for the Suns and he got us tickets to see the Roadrunners. That's when I became a big Roadrunners fan.

Q. Were you there through the Mustangs years, as well?
A. Oh yeah

Q. You are the undisputed Chuck-A-Puck champion. Do you  remember the first Chuck-A-Puck you threw?
A. No, but the people that come to the games with me call me "number two", because I came in second place a lot of the time.

Q. So, you threw some orange Chuck-A-Pucks back in the Mustangs days? Did you win back then?
A. Yes, I did. I won six or seven signed jerseys. I gave most of those out to my sisters-in-law, or whoever else wanted them.

Q. It was a little different then, when the Chuck-A-Puck and the 50/50 had a different prize.
A. I never did win the 50/50.

Q. How about the new Roadrunners, were you a season ticket holder right out of the chute?
A. Yeah.

Q. Do you remember the first Chuck-A-Puck ?
A. It was probably the first night. I didn't with, though. It took me a while before I started winning. I don't remember the first one.

Q. This year, it took you a few games before you started winning, but you've won twice, haven't you?
A. Two times, yeah.

Q. How many times last year
A. Seven, I think. Six or seven.

Q. What have you been spending the winnings on?
A. Bills. Paying off tickets for some other sports; the Rattlers and the Sting.

Q. Any sports memorabilia?
A. [Coyly] I'd rather not say if you know what I mean, but >yes!  [For the sake of Dave's relationship with his wife, Ame, we didn't push this one. -Ed]

Q. I understand that you have quite the jersey collection.
A. I have a few.

Q. What are the special ones?
A. I have a couple of nice Luc Robitaille. A couple nice Flyers jerseys. Probably, the one I like the best, is an alumni jersey from Rick MacLeish , a [Philadelphia Flyers] player back in the 70s. They did a game where they all wore those and I got one.

Q. What about some of the promo jersey from last year?
A. I got the old timer jersey, the blue jersey, and the white  jersey. But not the Harley Davidson jersey ...yet!

Q. What are you wearing tonight?
A. I'm wearing the Suns jersey that I won!

Q. Tell us the story behind that one.
A. I heard about the jersey going to the winner of the Chuck-A-Puck  last weekend, so I thought that I'd buy an extra six pucks to see if I could have a better chance of winning. Eighteen bucks is a good price for a good jersey, I just got lucky, and nobody else got their puck on the target that night.

Q. So you won the money, and the jersey?
A. Yep!

Q. Now, this jersey; they didn't really make it clear when you won it, but it's not a Roadrunners autographed Suns jersey. Who signed this jersey?
A. Well, the Suns did. Ame said that she clearly understood what was said. All I heard was "jersey" and I shut down.

Q. You're bound to win some more Chuck-A-Pucks, so what else are you going to buy? Do you have your eyes on any more memorabilia?
A. I'm going to do another jersey for another dog. I've had two dogs pass away. I've already got one jersey with "Wolfie" on it; that's not my name. The next one's going to be "Chaucer". In honor of my dog, that'll be the next one.

Q. This interview will be in the next newsletter. Is there anything you would like to say to the other Boosters?
A. You guys do a great job of supporting the players. Keep up the good work, and Wanda, keep feeding me those winning pucks. We didn't do it this time, but next time!

- Thanks for the interview, Dave, and good luck with the future Chuck-A-Pucks
